ITE Conference 13

European freight transport:
Unlimited growth or an environmentally sound and people-friendly policy?

13th international ITE conference, Strasbourg 15th–17th June 2006

Thursday, 15th June 2006: Discussion at the European Parliament

Friday, 16th June 2006: NGO day

Saturday, 17th June 2006: AGM ITE

Introduction

Does unlimited traffic growth make economic sense? Is it socially and environmentally sound or does it only benefit a few, at the expense of many others?

This topic is of relevance to the present situation: Despite the urging title "Time to Act!" in the EU Commission’s Transport White Paper five years ago, no real change has been felt and road transport in Europe is still growing, while the economy is stagnating. Instead of pushing ahead the concept of decoupling transport and economic growth and modal shift, there is the tendency to renounce to these concepts, and to concentrate on often doubtful infrastructure building plans as the main instruments.

Meanwhile the quality of life of millions of citizens who live along Europe’s main roads is eroding and is often plainly unbearable. Environmental resources such as available land and pure air are limited. And so is the capacity of the EU citizens' to support the adverse effects of traffic.

Citizens from various regions will hold a discussion with Members of the European Parliament about today’s situation and the economy of their region, and the political instruments that could be applied to make EU-transport more efficient, fairer (both for the population and for transport workers), more respectful to the environment, as well as achieving a better balance between economic development and the growth of the transport sector.
