Our aims are based on two
documents: our statutes,
which we adopted in Torino in 1998, and
the Strasbourg Manifesto from 1995. This manifesto has been signed by
numerous European organisations.
Aims
Art.2 of the statutes
The organisation aims to reduce the
volume and dangers of European freight traffic to a level which is not
harmful
to humans, animals and plants and their habitats..
This necessitates a fundamentally new
transport policy which is orientated around the principles of the Strasbourg
manifesto of October 16
th
, 1995.
The
manifesto
Manifesto for a humane and
environmentally friendly transport policy
The dangers of European freight traffic
have reached a level which is harmful to humans, animals and plants and their
habitats. No country can solve this problem alone. We need international
cooperation to improve quality of life and to preserve and develop regional
economic activities. In this context we commit ourselves to the development and
implementation of new rules on a European level, taking the Alpine Initiative as
an example and demanding the entry into force of the Alpine Convention.
Our activities are guided by the
following principles:
-
Have all transport modes pay their
true costs, including social and ecological costs.
-
Give priority to long-distance
transport
by rail and on existing waterway and along the coast.
-
Optimise the use of transport
capacities and improve existing infrastructures, particularly so as to reduce
the burden of transport.
-
Ensure the promotion of regional
economic cycles to reduce long-distance road and air transport.
-
Contrary to present decision
processes, these four basic principles give impetus to a long-term sustainable
development.
We finally demand that ensured
transparency and a more democratic approach be part of all public decisions.
